Do You Know

Do you know that you have eternal life? There are three things that have taught me that I have eternal life: the Bible, the Holy Spirit and His work on me and in my life.

1 John 5:13: These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

How can we know that we have eternal life? These things have I written unto you, One of God*s purposes for the Bible is so that we can know that we have eternal life. If you are ever going to know that you have eternal life, you will need the Bible. You will need someone to explain it to you who understands it. You will probably need more than one person like that. As people like that are explaining the Bible to you, they will be speaking to your ears and your mind. Someone else will be speaking to your heart, to the real you. That someone is the Holy Spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 2:14: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

John 3:3: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

When we receive Jesus into our hearts we become children of God, born again.

John 1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Before I received Jesus I worked very hard at understanding the Bible but I could not. I gave up on it. I was helpless to understand it because I was still a natural man. I could not enjoy it, I could not desire it and it did nothing for me. When I received Jesus the eyes of my heart and my understanding were opened to the things of the Spirit of God. I began to love the Bible, to need it and to thrive on it. I began to understand what the others who had received Christ understood.

Romans 8:16: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

When we receive eternal life, one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to communicate with our spirits (our hearts) that we are a child of God and have eternal life. Sometimes within seconds of receiving Jesus, we know that we have eternal life. I have heard the testimonies of many who knew it within seconds. For others it seems to take a few moments and for some a longer time. It sometimes seems to take some time for what their believing hearts have learned to find its way into their unbelieving minds. For me and for some others, knowing that we have eternal life was kind of intermittent for a time. For about six months after I received Jesus, sometimes I knew I had eternal life and sometimes I didn*t know it (in my mind). But after about six months of seeing God*s changes in my person, my desires, my likes and dislikes and many changes in my life I now know 24/7 that I have eternal life. It helped to notice Him changing me, changing my life and blessing others through me.

Mathew 13:13: Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people*s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

If you have received Jesus and He has given you an understanding of the Bible, don*t waste that most precious of all gifts. Take advantage of every opportunity to study the Bible and hear it taught and get busy serving the Lord and others.
